manoeuvre 6

August 03, 2023
This manoeuvre is no longer on the driving but it is still a useful and helpful exercise for turning your car around in the opposite direction. It will also help when you want to reverse into spaces in car parks. As always make sure the place you have chosen is safe , lawful and convenient. At first your driving instructor should help you to get things right first time by selecting a suitable place. To begin with your instructor will find a corner for you to practise on and then wilful explain what you are going to do while parked on the approach to it. As you drive past the road check for any obstructions or other problems which nay make the exercise unsafe. Using the mirror- signal-manoeuvre routine stop about two car lengths past the corner and about a meter away from the kerb. Turn round in your seat to get a better view to the rear. You may remove your seatbelt if you wish. Check all around for traffic and also pedestrians and then when it is safe to do so drive slowly backwards until the rear wheels are level with the corner. In a car you can normally judge this by watching for the kerb disappearing from the rear window and then appearing in the corner of the side window. Before steering round the corner , take a look all around for other road users and pedestrians. Where your manoeuvre will interfere with others, wait and give them priority. Observations are extremely important just before the front of the car swings out as you steer around the corner. When you start moving back again steer round the corner and keep checking that the side road is clear. Be prepared to pull forward round the corner again if any vehicles approach your from behind to use the junction. Look through the rear window well down the new road. When your car is almost straight, begin to straighten the steering wheel ignorer to bring the car parallel with kerb. Be sure to watch out for people nearby while you drive back two to three car lengths into the new road. Always check all around. Remember if you want the car to move towards the kerb -steer towards the kerb and if you want the car to move out a little - steer away a little. Before stopping , you may glance into the door mirror to check your distance from the kerb. When you have completed the exercise, secure the car and put your seatbelt on before moving away again.
