Turning left

July 11, 2023
Always use the Mirror Signal Manoeuvre routine on approach. Make sure that your positioning is well to the left, with the nearside of your car about 1 metre (3feet) from the kerb. Your speed on approach to a left turn is often sharper than when you are turning right. make sure that you slow down sufficiently and select the correct gear, or you could swing wide of the corner and finish up on the wrong side of the road. look out for other vehicles that are stopping to park, or parked just before a left- hand junction. Also watch out for vehicles that are parked just around the corner and those that are approaching in the side road. You should give way to pedestrians already crossing when you turn in - they have priority. keep a special look out for cyclists coming up on your left. Take extra care when crossing a cycle track, bus or cycle lane. Hold back and slow a cyclist to clear the junction before you turn, don’t overtake and then cut in on them. Avoid steering too early or to sharply, a rear wheel might mount the kerb. After the turn , when it is safe to do so, speed up as you leave the junction. Be sure to check your mirrors so you know who is following behind you on the new road and make sure that your signal has cancelled
