Turning right

July 11, 2023
Always use the Mirror -Signal - Manoeuvre Position Speed Look routine. Your road positioning needs to be carried out early when you are turning right as it will help other drivers. Be sure to position yourself as close to the centre of the road as is safe, so that vehicles can pass on your left if there is room. Take into account any parked vehicles or obstructions on the right-hand side of the road. In a one way street move to the right hand side of the road when appropriate. The speed on approach should be adjusted as necessary and always approach at a safe speed. Watch out for any oncoming traffic, especially motorcycles and bicycles which are less easily seen. Watch particularly for vehicles overtaking oncoming traffic. Stop before you turn if you have any doubt about being able to cross safely. Be on the look out for vehicles that are emerging from the minor road. Make sure to give way to pedestrians already crossing the minor road as they have priority. Look carefully for any obstructions that could prevent you from entering the minor road safely and leave you exposed on the wrong side of the road, risking a serious incident. You must not right - corner cut. This is crossing to the other side of the centre line until you are sure you can enter the minor road safely. When turning check your mirrors for overtaking traffic one final time before you turn. Do not right corner cut or accelerate fiercely. Your engine should just be pulling as you turn. If you miss turning do not cause a problem by stopping suddenly. Go past the junction and turn road at the next opportunity.
