Cross roads and crossing traffic

July 14, 2023
To drive straight ahead or turn left at a junction you should normally approach and stay in the left lane. Keep to this lane unless you see reasons for selecting another e.g turning right, over taking or the left hand lane is a turn left only lane and you want to go straight ahead. In this case you would then select another lane. At junctions with two or more lanes marked with arrows for going straight ahead , plan ahead and choose the most convenient one. To do this look ahead for obstructions and use your knowledge of the area. To turn right from a busy multi lane road, you should normally approach in the right - hand lane. One of your first priorities is to get into position early without disrupting other traffic. Check your mirrors for traffic coming up behind and to your sides and time your signal to let others know you want to move to the right. Try to maintain your speed, but be prepared to increase it so you can move safely. Reducing speed may encourage following traffic to overtake and prevent you from carrying out your manoeuvre. If this happens, be sure to hold back and wait for a larger space in the traffic. Thinking and planning well ahead should help you avoid becoming boxed in.
