During this exercise keep checking all around for other road users throughout the exercise-remember they have priority. Before attempting this exercise, you should have had plenty of practice at the other manoeuvres and your car control skills should be well developed. Make sure the site you select is safe, lawful and convenient. If you are likely to cause a serious disruption to the traffic flow look for somewhere else to park. Looking well ahead, you will need to find a space at least one and a half times the length of your car. Use the mirror - signal -manoeurve routine to position for the excercise. There are various ways of telling any following driver that you are stopping to reverse; a left indicator; brake lights ; an arm signal for slowing down; and when when you are more proficient, selecting the gear as soon as possible so that the reversing lights come on. Pull up about three feet (a metre) away from, and level or just forwards of , the front of the vehicle at far side of the space. 1.Select reverse gear and check all around for other road users. Reverse slowly until you car is level with the rear of the other vehicle. Pause and check all around again. Turn the wheel briskly to steer your car into the space. 2.When the rear of your car has reached the centre of the space straighten the wheels. Keep moving back with wheels straight, making sure the front end is clearing the vehicle in front. 3.When the front end has cleared the vehicle in front, steer briskly to the right to bring the front of your car into the space and then adjust the steering wheel in order to straighten it.
